I saw this on the BagNewsNotes post for today. Credit for the photo goes to “The Vancouver Sun’s Top photos from the year shot by Getty Images photographers around the world.”
The Bag’s Karen Hull reads photo this way:
[O]ur knowledge of just how the demographics fell out on November 6 leads to a different interpretation of [Getty photographer Joe] Raedle’s found nostalgia — the older white folks, the quaint print dresses, the old-fashioned fairground setting — and lends “otherness” to voters who readily believed Obama was the “other.”
I can see that. But I also can’t help thinking that if the guy whose face is hidden by the flag were holding a flyer saying “I like Ike!,” I’d have accepted this as an image from the 1950s! For the Republican Party — and everyone else — that’s worth thinking about. If we’re stuck with a two-party system, then we need for both parties to remain in the real world.
