The Bag’s Karen Hull reads photo this way:

[O]ur knowledge of just how the demographics fell out on November 6 leads to a different interpretation of [Getty photographer Joe] Raedle’s found nostalgia — the older white folks, the quaint print dresses, the old-fashioned fairground setting — and lends “otherness” to voters who readily believed Obama was the “other.”

I can see that. But I also can’t help thinking that if the guy whose face is hidden by the flag were holding a flyer saying “I like Ike!,” I’d have accepted this as an image from the 1950s! For the Republican Party — and everyone else — that’s worth thinking about. If we’re stuck with a two-party system, then we need for both parties to remain in the real world.
