Scarabus

Crawling toward the sunlight

Shared sacrifice, shared burden, pay as you go?

If wars can be put on the national credit card and the costs buried in the national deficit, then the majority of the American people (apart from the war profiteers) remain oblivious to the financial costs. If there is no draft and wars can be fought by often involuntary “volunteers” and mercenaries, then the vast majority of the American people remain oblivious to the human costs. If wars can be fought by order of an “imperial president” or “unitary executive,” without the formal consent of Congress, then the American people have no say in what’s being done in their name.

Oh, and to make it even better? Since the SCOTUS decision on Citizens United, the corporations and individuals who profit most from war can buy the “imperial president” or “unitary executive” who will conduct the wars they want. And the congress that will refuse to challenge those corporations and the executive they’ve purchased.
