Afterthought…

I wasn’t sure which tags or categories to assign here. Think about it. Why did the dude in the bandana (a) misspell “moron”? (b) think that liberals at the time were “morons”?

The RJT Equipment guy? (a) Was this a spelling error, or a proofreading error? (b) How could a rational person consider Barack Obama a “foreign leader”? I mean, yeah, I understand Donald Trumpish “birtherism.” Thinking Obama was born somewhere else is one thing, but thinking he’s acting on behalf of some foreign nation? Which nation? Kenya?!? Sheesh. (c ) What makes a functional human being vulnerable to to such virulent hatred and such gullibility to conspiracy theories? (d) Who exploited his vulnerability and gullibility? for what purpose?

Consider Mr. Creosote from Monty Python’s Meaning of Life. Let’s think of him as “Mr. GOP Job Creator.” He doesn’t actually create jobs, of course. In fact, he destroys jobs and workers, and consumes more and more – just for himself. How greedy can these bastards be?

“There must be more money!”

For them, that is. Their gluttony grows. It can never be satisfied. In Lawrence’s story, the greed causes the death of a child. In the movie… well, see below. In contemporary U.S.A.? What happens to a dream deferred? What happens when that dream is dangled close and the snatched away? We’ll see. As Martin Luther King said, the powerful never voluntarily give up their power.

What’s presented below is the actual logo for a genuine company: Sun Rise Sushi. It’s a kind of visual double-entendre. Its effect depends on the phenomenon figure-ground reversal. Question: Is its double meaning a mistake? Or is it a clever subliminal success? What do you think?

Here’s the best known example of figure-ground reversal, called a Rubin Vase. Is it really a white vase on a black ground? Or is it actually two silhouette faces confronting each other? The answer, of course, is “Yes.” You can see only one possibility at a time, but both meanings are there right along. One of the other is realized, based on the viewer’s focus. But the viewer is always aware of both.
